Merry Christmas!

I want to take a moment and thank you, my family & friends,
for supporting me this past year,
whether it be online or in person.
I feel so very blessed to be doing what I love, and sometimes wonder if one day I'll wake up and see that it was all just a beautiful dream.

The year has flown by faster than I can possibly believe,
and in just a very short week,
I will once again be running thru a new year.
So, with that said, I wish you (and I) a bit slower year
and
thought I'd share our funny face New Year's photo with you too....
just for fun!
I have BIG plans and many classes in the works for 2015,
and hope to share ALL the details with you very soon here,
and on my website,
So, thank you, thank you....so very much for sticking with me here.
Lord willing,
I'll see you next year!

Gratitude

I am not one to make New Year's resolutions.
I don't wait that long.  If I need a change,
or am due to begin something new....I just do it!
Mind you, I have not always been that way.
At the beginning of the year,
I began to once again think of all the significant people that have been a part of my life;
ones I have met (or been born to) in my life.
Those who have changed me...for the better.  I don't think of, or remember any,
who might have changed me in any other direction other than for "good".
But, that is just me.  I look for good.
I believe I search it out.
I will begin by giving due credit to my parents for that.
Both, actually, but I do think my mother a bit more so.
My mother came from a very poor family,
and her father, though he loved all 13 of his children,
drank. A lot.
It had to be hard to be a child of an alcoholic.
Not only was my mother in constant mental turmoil,
I know she felt deep humiliation for not having (her very own) shoes,
clothes and sometimes enough food to eat.
What she did have was a loving mother who did what she had to do
to take care of her children,
caring for them in a way that stuck with them thru thick & thin....
and made them feel rich, even though they were dirt poor.
Thankfully she also had older sisters & brothers who helped out the family~for most of my mother's younger life,
and for those siblings even before and most after her,
in the birth order.
My mother never talked much about her childhood, and if she did, it was never in an ungrateful way.
How can that be?  Today, at the age of 56,
I stand amazed by that,
and HER.
My father came from somewhat of a different background.
He only had 2 brothers and 1 sister, and his family was one of the (somewhat) "well-off" ones in the small town that they both grew up in...as far as I can tell.
They had plenty of food, and owned a large parcel of land,
which my grandmother had inherited.
My grandfather was a farmer, and raised sweet potatoes on that land.
My grandmother was a seamstress.
My dad isn't even in this picture of his brothers & sisters above.
He came about 13 years after this was taken...
thus making him the REAL baby of the family.
Perhaps, that is also why he became the mischief one.
A prankster of sorts.
He could really tell a good joke.  I kinda believe I get my quick wit from him.
Can't tell a joke like he did, that's my oldest sister's talent,
but I sure have a funny streak show up quite often....
and have known to be a bit mischievous myself.
(When I was much younger, of course...lol).

***********

For some wonderful reason, way beyond my control,
I believe that this year will be a good one.
Don't ask me how or why...I just know it.
And,
I say this with all humility,
as I truly have no idea what 2014 will bring.
I have several venues scheduled ahead, for teaching.
Some new, and some I've been to before...
with much delight!
Beginning in just a couple of weeks, I will be in Tucson,
at
Art Retreat in the Desert
and then, I will travel along with my friend,
Deryn Mentock,
for a short teaching gig in the DC area,
called
Boots & Bliss!
Yeeehawww, to that!
In the meantime,
I am diligently working on my two online classes that I'll be a part of,
for the third year...
Artful Gathering 2014.
For the first time, I am traveling to Kentucky, to teach at
Ephemera Paducah
in May!
AND...
I will be in Phoenix, this summer,
to teach, once again,
at Art Unraveled.

***********

So, for just one moment today, won't you consider who has made a difference in your life?
Say, if you possibly can,
a huge thank you for all that you have been given.
For those, both good and bad.
You (as I) have no earthly idea why you might have been given the life you are living,
and the hand you've been dealt.
I do believe it is by a design we will someday come to see.
Maybe that will be...
in 2014.

***********
In the mean time, I hope to see you this year,
either in person, or on-line.
More specific details about my gigs can be found above,
under the Classes & On-line Classes tabs!

(I'll be sharing more persons who have influenced me along my way,
when I return from Tucson, so stay tuned!)

No Hill for a Stepper

Melanie and I
At the beginning of the trail,
about to climb
Old Baldy,
in Garner State Park.
It's been almost a month since we returned home from our annual week long RV trip
to a great RV park situated on a bluff just above the clear crisp water of the Frio River.
It's nestled among beautiful gnarly live oak trees and several pretty high hills
(which are considered mountains by this Texan).
The trip is definitely one of the highlights of my year.
I think we have been going to this park for well over 8 years.
I went with one BIG goal in mind...
to once again climb, what is known as,
Old Baldy.
Mind you, it would not have been my first trip up to the top,
as I have climbed it probably 3 or 4 other times.
But, not for awhile.
I was determined to do it this time....
a gift to me on my 56th birthday!
I, along with my daughter, Melanie,
took out the very morning of my birthday to conquer
"the mountain".
It is quite inspiring when you reach the the top,
as there is a huge additional pile of rocks there...
with the United States flag flying high and mighty in the wind
(when it blows)!

I have to tell you....it felt good.....going up,
but especially good coming down!

I have been traveling quite a bit this past year to teach.
Tucson, AZ., Houston, TX., Coronado, CA., Round Top, TX.
and
Phoenix, AZ.
I have one more teaching gig for the year, and it's next month,
once again in Round Top,
Art Retreat at The Prairie.
I am way excited,
as I will be teaching three new classes.
 From Rhinestones to Infinity
This is a fun new class for me.
I have incorporated a huge vintage rhinestone brooch into this design,
along with some beautiful links called Double Infinity links.
These links were designed, and came straight from my friend Cindy Wimmer's book,
The Missing Link,
which will be out next month.
I, along with many other wonderful jewelry artists,
was thrilled to be one of her guest designers.
Cindy has a pre-order link for it
here.
I'll also be teaching another new torch fired enamel class
Ruffled Poppies
Lots of fun techniques in this class!
Scroll down the page and read all about it here.
Last, but certainly not least,
I'll teach a fun bangle class on Sunday.
Birds of a Feather
So, won't you come flock with us in Round Top?
I can't begin to tell you how much fun we have at this intimate setting.
And, how can you not love anything Rachel Ashwell inspired?

Hopping into Spring and Artful Gathering Hopping

Life has been hopping here at the Cook homestead...in more ways than one!
We just had our grandchildren over this past weekend, and needless to say,
they had a blast at PawPaw & Nana's house.
They jumped and hopped and wrestled,
and we laughed enough to fill up a hot air balloon!
Alton is 4, and loves driving his Jeep and riding his bike.  You would not believe how much Samantha, who is 14-1/2 months, loves to ride around in the backyard with her brother.  She is one little girl who loves to ride in a Jeep!
She fits right into our Jeep driving, Bronco bustin' &
Land Rover driving group!

We've had unseasonal cool weather here,
and we've been lovin' every minute of it!
Usually by now we would be running the air conditioner full blast...
Yee haw, is all I can say!

feet first

"she was meek"
The name given my newest Heart Strings
which by the way, is the necklace I just completed
and is used as the class example for the online class I will be teaching this summer
at Artful Gathering.
Teaching an online class is something I have wanted to do for quite some time,
but really didn't have the time or the know how.
So, I thought the best way to accomplish both these goals was to just go ahead and do it.
Yes, that's me.  Commit and then learn.
You could say I learn by fire...quite the concept, don't you think?
"Heart Strings"
So, as I look at the word meek,
added over a week ago to the tiny book designed during the taping of my newest
Heart Strings,
I feel humbled as I reflect upon what I've learned so far...
  1. I am part of a group of ladies who are incredibly giving and supportive.
  2. I could not have chosen a better group to help me begin learning the ins and outs of teaching an online class, than the group I am a part of at Artful Gathering.
  3. I am so glad that I have completed the first of my two classes today, and am now half way through my commitment.
  4. I really enjoy the videoing part of the class, but the editing is just about as much fun for me.  (I know this is where my creative side begins to kick in, even though I have only tipped the iceberg...this time around =)
  5. I still have much to learn about what all goes into teaching online classes.
  6. I love learning new things, once I get past the actual part of beginning to learn new things.
  7. I can hardly stop myself from thinking ahead, into future classes I would like to offer...online.
  8. I am thankful for other artists who love to share Information as much as I do.
  9. I love teaching and sharing what I know about the little that I know =)
  10. I am glad I have a supportive husband, because if I didn't have him, none of this would mean a thing to me.

the girls

If you didn't get to skip over to
Love My Art Jewelry
yesterday to read my guest post,
I thought I'd share it with you here today.

*******

I could never had predicted how important this torn cabinet card would become in the years to come in my artistic journey.
A picture of two sisters, who actually are distant cousins of mine.
Found in a dresser drawer of my grandparent's home, both long gone,
the most precious treasure, worth more to me than silver and gold.
Stacks of family cabinet cards, given to my grandparents,
that seam to reveal a close knit family full of sharing.
I was blessed to inherit the 1920 farmhouse from my bachelor uncle,
an older brother of my father,
who before that had inherited it from his parents and my grandparents.
Dear Lord, Let me always dance with heart....

*******
I originally shared the story above almost three years ago in the fall 2009 issue of
Somerset Memories,
called Cabinet Card Sisters.
I had made a couple of soldered jewelry pendants, one using this very same picture.
They eventually made their way into my marketing, as one day sitting at my computer,
I pulled up this very picture in one of my editing programs.
I hit crop and when I did...the idea was born.
I first began using a black and white version of this picture on the front of my class handouts.
But later that year, I had a designer, Susie Hibdon
use it to design my business cards, postcards and as a banner for my shows.
Next, I placed them in resin filled bezels.
"Art Sistas"
With many more bezels in the waiting...
I've used the sisters together.  I've used them one at a time.
Obviously I've used only their hands.
But, I have found that I love to use only their feet!

"dance with heart"
(I will be teaching at Spring Beads on May 12, 2012, in Spring, Texas)
And, just their faces too!
I've used them in larger soldered pendants.
"happy and blest"
(I will be teaching at Art Unraveled 2012, in Phoenix, Arizona)
And covered them with mica.
These necklaces were just featured in the winter 2011 issue of
Belle Armoire Jewelry.
"sisters"
(I will be teaching at Art Unraveled 2012, in Phoenix, Arizona)
Recently I used one of the little girls as my blog favicon.
And last, but certainly not least,
I put together a group of images for a group of Moo stickers,
which I have been using as the closure on my class kit bags.
The message, one I had written,
rings strong and true as I travel this artistic road I have chosen.
It has proven to be never dull, ever winding, and worth every minute.

much to be thankful for...

As we prepare for family to begin arriving today for our annual
Christmas Eve Party,
Allen and I would like to wish you a blessed
Christmas
with your own family
and/or friends.
I'd like to share the last scene from one of my favorite

ornament swap and classes in 2012

I have patiently been watching this stack grow for the last
couple of weeks.
My friend, Deryn Mentock, asked me to (step in) participate in the annual
Twelve Days of Christmas Ornament Swap,
as she recuperates from what sounds like excruciating shoulder pain.
I was sad (for her) yet thrilled she asked me to be a part of it,
as I have watched from afar each year as she opened the swap ornaments, one by one, from 11 or sometimes 12, very talented artists...
Ruth Rae
  Maija Lepore
  Kelly Snelling
Joanna Pierotti
Pilar Pollack
Jackie Allison
  Crystal Neubauer
 Sally Turlington
 Lou McCulloch
Danita Salcido
 Deryn Mentock
So now, I am anxiously waiting for tomorrow,
as that's the day the group decided to begin opening the ornaments this year!
*(I will be posting pics each day)*
Soon after I had my 12 ornaments out the door, I began reminiscing on the past year.
My husband and I crisscrossed the United States,
as I taught at quite a variety of venues,
finding out that after teaching at the last retreat in September....
....I needed a little rest =)
Well, that lasted for about 2 weeks....or less.
I began working on preliminary details for a couple of online classes
that I will be teaching next summer at
Two of my favorite classes,
Etched and Layered Cuffs

and

You can be sure that I'll be packing in as much information in these two classes
as I possibly can!
On another note, for the first time in over 15 years,
I was able to get our Christmas tree up by December 1st!
It felt great hanging the ornaments I've pulled out of boxes for more years than I can count.
This little snowman was made by my Melanie
(who is 36 today~HaPpY BirThDAy Mel)
 in elementary school....*sigh*.
I love decorating for Christmas, and always vow I will do it earlier.  But, I must admit,
it is just not that fun climbing up into the attic and pulling out way more boxes of decorations than are needed.  Yes, I have some culling to do.
Which I will finally do, in January =)
Now, onto more class details for 2012.
I have been on the phone and emailing potential teachers for the
Spring and Fall art retreats at The Prairie.
As mentioned in my earlier post, Deryn Mentock and I will be teaching in the Spring.
Three days of classes.  Special after hours activities.  And MORE.
The lovely Karen Valentine is busy working away on our new site.
Details will continue to trickle in as they develop.
And finally,
I've been busy working on a new class that will debut at The Prairie.
Just can't get enough of it.
See you tomorrow.
